Library Visit on Pasifika Heritage

Today we learnt about Pasifika heritage at our local library. We learnt names of the different areas and what they mean. Pacific means peaceful. The parts of the Pacific islands are Melanesia, Polynesia and Micronesia. The presenters showed us some Traditional fishing equipment which you can see in the photos. They also showed us some musical instruments from the islands.

Did you know that fishing in the past they made ropes out of coconut husk? They call the rope KAFA. The large cage type item is a Hinaki (Inaki in the Islands, Finaki in Fiji). It's used to catch eels.

You will also see the fish hook, which they made out of shells traditionally, called a matau. The edges of the matau are drilled and then the hook is carved using flint-stone. A rock is used at the end to smooth the matau / hook. This process takes a long time, as you can imagine!

In one of the photos a man is holding an oval shape ball like a mouse. This a maka feke (a Tongan device for catching Octopus). In another photo you see us using their wooden drills (wiriwiri or viriviri in Tongan).

What a fabulous morning of learning! We really are so lucky to have had such a rich cultural outing. Thank you to our parent helpers Mrs Barrington and Mrs De Farias.
